Press Statement: Ethiopian Health Professionals Condemn MOH’s Dismissive Response and Demand Immediate Action
The recent press release by the Ministry of Health (MOH) is a blatant display of arrogance and a deliberate refusal to address the legitimate survival questions raised by Ethiopian health professionals.
For over 30 days, we have sought meaningful dialogue, yet the MOH has chosen to ignore, dismiss, and disrespect the very individuals upholding the nation’s healthcare system. Their belated and condescending directive to "ask questions while working" is an insult to our intelligence and professionalism.
The MOH’s claim that hospitals are "fully functioning" is a gross misrepresentation of reality. Multiple public notices from major hospitals across the country confirm severe disruptions due to unresolved grievances. We demand that the Ministry verify facts before misleading the public.
Furthermore, we strongly condemn the unlawful detention of health professionals in various regions simply for advocating their rights. Intimidation and repression will not silence us. The government must immediately release all detained colleagues and cease its unjust crackdown.
If the MOH continues to evade accountability, resort to misinformation, and employ coercive measures, we will have no choice but to escalate our protest. A full, indefinite strike will commence on Monday, halting all services until the following demands are met:
1. Transparent and time-bound responses to all submitted survival questions.
2. Immediate release of all detained health professionals and an end to harassment.
3. Good-faith negotiations with credible guarantees for resolution.
The Ethiopian healthcare system cannot function without its professionals. We urge the MOH and the government to act responsibly—before the consequences of their negligence become irreversible.
Unity is Power!
Now or Never!
