Report of Harassment Against Striking Medical Staff at Butajira General Hospital
This report documents the ongoing harassment of doctors and nurses participating in lawful strike action at Butajira General Hospital. Three individuals in particular have been systematically intimidating staff and interfering with our collective labor action:
Tsegaye Jemal (HR Officer, Phone: 0913 993 228) has been threatening striking workers with termination and has inappropriately contacted family members of staff to pressure them into returning to work.
Nigatu Desse (Quality Team Nurse, Phone: 0913 447 300) has been personally confronting nurses and general practitioners, making false promises and threats to coerce them into breaking the strike.
Jemal Mustefa (IESO & MCH Director, Phone: 0913 348 093) has created a hostile work environment through administrative retaliation and by obstructing our lawful organizing efforts.
These individuals have crossed professional boundaries by directly contacting staff members' families and creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation. We have gathered photographic evidence of two of the individuals engaged in these activities.
We urgently call on hospital administration to:
Immediately cease all harassment of striking workers
Prohibit any further contact with staff family members
Guarantee there will be no retaliation for participation in this lawful labor action
This report has been filed with the Ethiopian Medical Association and will be submitted to the Regional Health Bureau. We advise all striking workers to document any incidents of harassment, avoid direct confrontations, and report new incidents through secure channels.
We stand united in our demand for fair treatment and the right to advocate for better working conditions without fear of retaliation or intimidation. Solidarity with all healthcare workers fighting for their rights.
Note: This report is being circulated to appropriate authorities while protecting the identities of vulnerable staff members.
