POLICE REFUSE TO RELEASE DR. HABTAMU ALEMU DESPITE COURT BAIL ORDER
Yesterday, the Appellate Court reviewed the case of Dr. Habtamu Alemu and ordered his release on 40,000 ETB bail under two conditions:
He must not leave Dire Dawa City or Ethiopia.
He must abstain from using social media until the case is officially closed.
Despite the court’s explicit ruling, the Crime Investigation Department of the Dire Dawa Police Commission has refused to release him, citing his previous involvement in healthcare advocacy movements.
Information confirmed by a police officer indicates that while there are no valid criminal grounds against him, the department is arbitrarily prolonging his detention to subject him to further physical and psychological distress.
Power and authorities are temporary, but the rule of law must prevail. Disregarding a direct court order is a blatant violation of human rights and basic legal process. We demand full respect for the rule of law and the immediate release of Dr. Habtamu!
