Read moreOn June 17, 2026, at approximately 11:00 AM, security forces raided the home of Dr. Habtamu Alemu Shewa - Medical Doctor and former independent parliamentary candidate for Dire Dawa-1. He was arrested at his residence, and officers conducted a thorough search of his home, confiscating his personal devices, documents, and other belongings.
By targeting an educated professional who refused to remain silent, the administration sent a chilling message to anyone who dares speak truth to power. That message did not go unanswered.
The arrest followed a pattern of intimidation. Just one day earlier, Dr. Habtamu's brother, Asegid Alemu, had been detained. When Dr. Habtamu withdrew his candidacy, he documented how security officials harassed his supporters, denied them bail, and threatened the public against backing his campaign. This detention was the direct execution of those threats - a warning to all who would challenge the system.
No formal charges were ever filed against Dr. Habtamu. After 42 days in detention, he was released on July 30, 2026. His family, colleagues, and supporters continue to call for accountability and for the same justice to be extended to others still held without charge.
